한글날을 맞이하며

여러분은 혹시 자신이 지금 쓰고 있는 말이나 글에 대하여 고맙다는 생각을 한 번이라도 해 본 적이 있나요?

우리는 대기 중에 살면서 숨을 쉴 수 있는 공기의 고마움은 모르고 지내기 쉽습니다. 또 아버지 어머니의 따뜻한 사랑 속에 살기 때문에 부모의 은혜를 헤아리지 못하고 지내기 쉽습니다.

마찬가지로 우리는 우리 땅에서 아무런 불편을 모르고 살아가기 때문에 미처 내 나라의 말과 글에는 신경이 무디어져 그런 걸 알 수 없습니다.

그러나 우리가 우리 땅을 벗어나 남의 나라에 가 보았을 때는 우리의 말과 글이 얼마나 소중한지를 알게 될 것입니다.

우리가 쓰고 있는 독창적인 글 ‘한글’은 알다시피 지금으로부터 5백년여 년 전 세종대왕께서 여러 학자들과 더불어 연구하여 창제한 글자입니다.

이 자랑스러운 우리글이 오늘 이처럼 자유롭게 쓰이기까지는 그 동안 많은 시련과 변화를 거듭해 왔지만, 세종대왕께서 많은 신하들의 반대를 무릅쓰고, 그 독창적인 닿소리 열여덟자와 홀소리 열자, 모두 스물여덟 글자를 발명해 냈다는 것은 우리나라 5천 년 역사 속에 가장 뛰어나고 자랑스런 일이라 아니할 수 없습니다.

세계 160개 나라 중에 자기의 독창적인 문자를 갖고 생활하는 나라는 불과 약 10여 개 국가밖에 안됩니다. 우리보다 문자를 발명한 시기가 훨씬 앞섰다는 중국의 경우를 보면 그 글자의 수가 너무 많아서 중국사람 자신도 제 나라 글자 수가 몇인지 알 수 없다고 하니 얼마나 우스운 일입니까? 그런데도 글자를 필요에 따라 자꾸 만들어내고 있다고 합니다.

이웃 나라 일본 글자 가나를 보면 그건 완전히 중국의 한자에서 한쪽 변을 따다가 만들어 낸 모방 글자입니다. 거기 비하면 우리가 쓰고 있는 한글은 세계 어느 나라에서도 찾아볼 수 없는 독창적인 글자인 것입니다.

우리는 이러한 독창적인 글을 쓰면서 세종대왕을 비롯한 슬기로운 우리 조상들에게 고개 숙여 감사해야 하겠습니다.

그런데 요즘 일부 줏대 없는 사람들이 필요 이상으로 다른 나라 말, 다른 나라 글을 숭상하면서 우리말 우리글을 우습게 여기는 것은 매우 잘못된 생각이라고 하겠습니다.

한글날을 맞이하고 보내면서 내가 한글을 얼마나 정확하게 쓰고 있는가를 한번쯤 반성해 보아야 하겠습니다. heungyong57@hanmail.net

Celebrating Hangeul Day

Have you ever felt grateful for the words or writings you are using?

We live in the atmosphere and it is easy to not appreciate the air we breathe. Also, because we live in the warm love of our fathers and mothers, it is easy to not appreciate the grace of our parents.

Similarly, because we live in our own land without any inconveniences, we become insensitive to the language and writing of our own country and do not know them.

However, when we leave our land and go to a foreign country, we will realize how precious our language and writing are.

As you know, the unique writing system we use, ‘Hangeul’, was created by King Sejong the Great through research with many scholars about 500 years ago.

This proud Korean language has gone through many trials and changes until it can be used so freely today. However, the fact that King Sejong the Great, despite the opposition of many of his subjects, invented 28 unique letters, 18 consonants and 10 vowels, is the most outstanding and proud achievement in our country’s 5,000-year history.

Out of 160 countries in the world, only about 10 countries have their own unique letters. If we look at China, which invented its letters much earlier than us, the number of letters is so large that even the Chinese themselves do not know how many letters they have. How ridiculous is that? And yet, they say they keep creating letters as needed.

If we look at the Japanese letters, which are our neighbors, they are completely imitation letters created by taking one side of Chinese characters. Compared to that, the Hangul we use is an original letter that cannot be found in any other country in the world.

As we write these unique texts, we should bow our heads in gratitude to our wise ancestors, including King Sejong.

However, these days, some ignorant people are excessively worshipping other languages ​​and writings and making fun of our own language and writings, which is a very wrong idea.

As we celebrate and spend Hangul Day, I should reflect on how accurately I am writing Hangul. heungyong57@hanmail.net
