10월2일 오후 대전고법은 성폭행 혐의로 1심에서 징역 23년을 선고받은 기독교복음선교회 JMS 정명석 목사에 대한 항소심 선고에서 17년형을 선고(검찰 30년 구형)했다.

[정명석 목사 사건 취재 후기]나는 언론인 오소백(1921~2008)선생한테 기자 사사를 받았다. 언론인 오소백 선생(서울언론인클럽 전 회장)은 ‘영원한 사회부장’으로 불리었다. 1976년 강원도 주문진 해수욕장에서 열렸던 하계 기자수련 모임에 인연이 되어, 작고하실 때까지, 이 분에게서 기자가 무언지를 배웠다. 이 분은 나에게 “서울 언론인클럽에 입회하라”고 권유, 이 회에서도 활동을 했었다.
나는 군대에서 정훈부서에서 일해, 이때부터 기자생활로 친다. 그러하니, 기자생활=51년의 세월이 흘렀다. 이런 긴, 기자생활 중에 기독교복음선교회(JMS) 정명석 목사 사건을 만났다. 2023년 3월부터 였다. 나는 왜, 이 사건에 뛰어들게 됐는가?
필자는 본지(브레이크뉴스) 2023년 5월1일자 “JMS 정명석 목사 “성폭행!..피해여성 1만명 명단 공개하면 믿겠다!” 제목의 기사에서 “지난 3월 한 매체는 JMS를 반대하는 단체의 활동가인 A씨와의 인터뷰 내용을 기사화했다. 이 기사는 “JMS(정명석)가 여성 1만명과 성관계...목표를 초과 달성했다“라는 내용을 기사화 했다. 정명석 목사가 설교 때 '성적구원=하늘애인 1만명 만들기가 목표라는 말을 했다'면서 ”JMS(정명석)가 여성 1만명과 성관계...목표를 초과 달성했다“는 내용이었다. ”1만명과 성폭행“에 대해, 그 근거를 대지 않고, 정명석 목사가 설교 때 주장했다는 설교 중의 말을, 이에 대입(代入)시키고 있다”면서 “정명석 목사가 기독교의 경전인 성경을 해석하는 과정에서 '하늘애인 1만명'을 언급 했는데, 이를 '성폭행'으로 번역한 듯하다. 일반적으로 외서(外書)를 번역할 때는 오역(誤譯)이 있을 수 있다. 정명석 목사가 1만명 성폭행을 초과달성했다는 주장은 정명석 목사의 설교를 이해하는 과정에서 오역적(誤譯的)인 범주에 드는 내용으로 보인다.”고 기사화 했다.
이어 “만약, 정명석 목사가 “1만명 이상의 여성을 성폭행 했다”고 하면, 수사-재판 과정에서 피해 여성의 명단(리스트)이 나와야 하는 게 옳다. 성폭행 1만명이라는 숫자는, 단지 피해자 모임의 한 간부 입에서 나온 말에만 의존되는 숫자이며, 이 숫자가 조사의 과정이 없이 공론화 됐다. 이 숫자는 피해자가 누구인지의 증거가 없이, 한 반대자의 입에서 나온, 공중에 떠 있는 숫자에 불과하다. 언론 역시 자체 조사의 숫자 보도가 아닌, 허황(虛荒), 그 자체라 할 수 있다. 이런 류(類)의 기사를 취급한 국내의 매체는 30여개를 넘어섰다.“고 지적했다.
이어 “정명석 목사의 성폭행 사건은 어떠한가? 가해자는 정명석 목사 1인이며, 피해자 수가 1만명이 넘는다고 주장되지만, 피해자 이름을 단 한명도 적시(摘示)하지 않았다. 유령(幽靈)들이 저지른 사건처럼, 허무맹랑한 사건으로 치부(恥部)된다. 정명석 목사가 교단 내에서 어떤 사건에 휘말렸는지 알 수는 없다. 다만, 필자는 “정명석 목사의 성폭행 사건은 사실과 거리가 먼 유령사건일 가능성이 높다.”는 결론을 제시한다.”고 덧붙였다.
지난 2023년 12월22일 대전지법 형사12부는 정명석 목사에게 징역 23년을 선고했다. 이 사건과 관련된 검사는 이런 말을 하지 않았지만, 주변의 민심은 1만명을 성폭행한 사건이라는 범주에서 맴돌았다. 나는 한국인 한 남성이 1만 여 명이 넘는 여성을 성폭했다는 것을 가짜뉴스로 인식, 그 뒤에 전개되는 기사들을 꼼꼼하게 따졌다. 글로벌사회, 이 사건으로 한국 남성들이 받을 피해를 우려했기 때문이다.
2024년 10월2일 오후, 대전고법은 정명석 목사 사건에 대한 판결에서 17년 형을 선고했다. 1심에서는 23년 형이었다. 6년이나 감행됐다. 그의 형량에 사건의 진실이 담겨 있다. 다행이다. 이 날은 정명석 그가 1만명 이상의 여성을 성폭행해다는 딱지가 떨어진 날이다. 글로벌 시대, 한국 남성들이 입어야할 선의의 피해가 없어져서 천만 다행이다.
1979년 12.12 군사쿠데타 범인인 노태우는 17년형을 선고 받았었다. 정명석 목사는 1심(2023.12.22.)에서 23년형이라는 극형에 준하는 형량을 받았다. 이번 2심(2024.10.2.)에서 17년형으로 감형, 악랄한 범행이 아님이 증명됐다.
지난 2년여 기간, 기자인 나를 비판하는 이들도 종종 있었다. 그 동안, 정명석 목사와 관련된, 나의 취재 기록은 “나는 정명석을 만나라 간다(대양미디어. 2023.09.25.)”라는 저서에 낱낱이 수록돼 있다. 이 사건에 매달렸던 나는, 승자도 패자도 결코 아니다. 나는 오직 기록하는 기록자=기자일 뿐이다. 정명석 목사는 수감생활을 위해 감옥으로 가고, 기자인 나는 다른 사건에 매달리기 위해, 일상으로 복귀한다. 언론인 오소백 선생은 나에게 여러 번 말했다. “기자는 기사로만 말해야 한다.”라고. moonilsuk@naver.com
