노바야 가제타(Новая Газета), 그리고 드미트리 무라토프(Дмитрий Муратов)

노바야 가제타(Новая Газета), 그리고 드미트리 무라토프(Дмитрий Муратов). 이 잡지는 러시아 언론인 드미트리 무라토프(Дмитрий Муратов)가 창간했다. 늘 이 잡지의 보도를 보고 있지만 신문 전체를 읽지 않는다. 그 이유는 이 신문이야말로 딴지일보급의 이적 언론이기 때문이다. 이 신문사 편집장이자 주인인 무라토프는 러시아 한복판인 사마라 출신이고 사마라의 옛 이름인 쿠이비셰프 주립대학 출신이며 소련군에서 전신비밀통신 기술자로 복무한 바 있다. 게다가 노바야 가제타(Новая Газета)이 언론 자체도 모스크바에서 창간했다. 군 복무 후, 무라토프는 볼즈스끼 꼼소몰레츠(Волжский комсомолец) 신문에서 일하면서 경험을 쌓았고 1992년 11월, 무라토프는 기존 러시아 신문의 선전, 선동성 짙은 기사에 환멸을 느껴 볼즈스끼 꼼소몰레츠(Волжский комсомолец)를 떠나 러시아 옐친 정부의 새로운 편집 정책에 동의하지 않는 언론인들과 함께 언론인 협회를 공동으로 설립했다. 1993년에는 노바야 데일리 뉴스잡지(Novaya Daily Newspaper)의 창립자가 되었으며 신문의 첫 번째 호는 1993년 4월 1일에 발행되었다. 무라토프는 편집 위원회에 합류하여 부편집장이 되었다. 이 노바야 데일리 뉴스잡지(Novaya Daily Newspaper)가 노바야 가제타(Новая Газета)의 전신이 된다. 

그는 컴퓨터 2대, 프린터 1대, 방 2개, 급여는 0루블로 시작했고 초기 발행 부수는 1만 부에서 출발했다. 그러나 이 언론이 크기 시작한 것은 미하일 고르바초프의 후원과 후광 덕택이었다. 미하일 고르바초프는 소련이 몰락한 이후, 다시 정치계에 뛰어들 정도의 힘은 없었지만 미소 냉전 체제를 종식시키고 이념의 이데올로기를 걷어내 노벨 평화상까지 받아낸 인물이기에 그게 서구 세계에 끼치는 영향은 대단했다. 그를 통해서 서구의 각종 지원을 받는 것은 어쩌면 당연한 이유일지도 모른다. 무라토프의 말은 표현의 자유를 말하지만 이 언론은 러시아와 러시아 정부에 전혀 우호적이지 않은 언론이었다. 옐친을 비판했고 푸틴을 비판했으며 러시아 정부가 하고 있는 일에 대해 어떠한 일도 긍정적으로 보지 않는다. 모두 부정적으로 보며 지침은 소련 붕괴 후 재건될 러시아의 국가 정책에 영향을 미칠 정직하고 독립적인 신문을 만드는 것을 목표로 했다고 하지만 결코 정직한 언론으로 보기 어렵다. 

노바야 가제타(Новая Газета)는 한 번도 러시아와 러시아 정부를 칭찬한 적이 없다. 러시아가 이뤄낸 어떤 성과에도 이를 폄하하고 비판하는데 앞장 서왔다. 러시아를 재건하는데 있어 정직한 언론이라 표방했고 러시아판 정론직필(正論直筆)을 내세웠지만 러시아가 재건되는데 이 신문은 단 한 번도 도움이 된 적 없다. 오히려 이적 행위로 미국과 서구의 힘을 빌어 러시아를 비판했고 러시아 정부의 흠이 뭐가 있는지 파는 것에만 집중했다. 영국의 가디언지와 프랑스의 르몽드지가 노바야 가제타를 러시아 최후의 양심의 소리로 칭찬했는데 러시아가 분열하여 쇠퇴하고 멸망하길 바라는 서구의 입장에서 노바야 가제타는 가장 환영받는 신문인 것이다. 러시아를 서구의 입맛대로 왜곡하여 보도하고, 극단적인 이념주의가 지속되고 있다는 형식으로 보도되고 있는 것도, 한국에 러시아가 부정적인 이미지로 자리잡게 하는 것도, 모두 노바야 가제타로부터 시작된 것이다. 특히 푸틴에 대해서는 매우 부정적이며 아마도 러시아가 멸망하고 슬라브족이 지상에서 없어지길 바라는 언론은 <노바야 가제타>일 것이 분명하다.

노바야 가제타는 2000년 푸틴이 집권한 이후 본격적으로 언론을 장악하기 시작하면서 러시아 정부와 대립각을 세우기 시작했지만 이제는 부정적인 언론을 전하는 것이 전부가 아닌 행동으로도 나서기 시작했다. 이는 2011년부터 시작했는데 OBD-INFO를 서포터하면서 선전, 선동으로도 나서기 시작한 것이다. 국가 두마 의회 선거, 대통령 선거 때마다 부정선거를 주장하며 선전, 선동, 그리고 시위를 벌이는데 앞장서기 시작했고 최근에는 반전 운동으로 시위를 촉발시켜 전면에 나섰다. 기껏 일간지 발행하는 수준의 언론사가 갑자기 선전, 선동으로 인한 시위 촉발, 그리고 시위에 앞장 서 러시아 정부를 직접적으로 규탄하는 운동 및 폭동을 조장까지 하고 있는 것이다. 단순한 언론지를 내는 언론 기관이 이처럼 선전, 선동과 그로 인한 행동으로 나서는 것은 매우 이례적이다. 그처럼 행동으로 나서는 것도 돈이 한 두푼 들어가는 것이 아니다.. 컴퓨터 2대, 프린터 1대, 방 2개, 급여는 0루블로 시작한 반 정부 언론이, 고르바초프의 후원과 후광만 받는다고 갑자기 정부를 전복시키고자 하는 시위 및 폭동에 앞장 선다는 것은 돈 많은 누군가의 배후 지원 없이는 불가능하다. 

게다가 노바야 가제타는 영국 The Independent 지의 소유주인 러시아 기업인 알렉산드르 레베데프가 39%의 지분을 갖고 있다. The Independent는 영국 중도좌파 성향의 권위지인 더 가디언과 함께 영국 정론지의 쌍벽을 이루었던 대형 매체였다. 인디펜던트 소유주인 ESI 미디어는 2016년 3월 26일을 기점으로 종이신문 발행을 전면 중단하였고, 현재는 온라인 뉴스 사이트만 운영하고 있는 상태이다. 이들은 서방과 자주 접촉하는 러시아 반 체제 인사들과 푸틴에게 축출된 올리가르히들과도 자주 접촉했다. 푸틴과 통합 러시아 당의 비리만 팠지 90년대 초반부터 러시아 경제가 민영화되면서 올리가르히가 된 이들에 대한 비리 및 범죄 행각에 대한 취재를 한 적이 단 한 번도 없다. 그런 언론이 현 러시아-우크라이나 전쟁에서 우크라이나 네오나치가 저지른 범죄에 대해 취재할리 만무하다. 오히려 우크라이나를 지지하고 러시아를 비난하며 <노바야 가제타>와 함께 미국, 영국 언론과 손 잡고 오히려 러시아에 대해 부정적인 보도를 흘리며 정보를 제공한다.

이쯤되면 러시아 정부 입장에서 이 언론에 대해 탄압하는 것은 지극히 당연하다. 러시아 정부에 비판적인 기사를 쓰다가 의문의 죽음을 맞이한 노바야 가제타 기자가 한 둘이 아니다. 2006년에 살해당한 안나 플릿콥스까야(Анна Политковская)기자가 대표적인 인물인데 노바야 가제타 기자들은 모두 반 정부 인사들, 특히 친 서구, 친 미국, 친 우크라이나파였다. 안나 플릿콥스까야(Анна Политковская) 기자의 경우, 우크라이나계 러시아인으로 1958년 8월 30일 미국 뉴욕시에서 태어난 인물이기도 하다. 다른 노바야 가제타 기자들도 출신과 혈통을 찾아보면 우크라이나계, 아니면 어떠한 형식으로든 서구 및 미국과 관계도 있을 것이고 영어도 기가 막히게 잘 할 것이다. 더불어 노바야 가제타를 지지하는 정치평론가인 율리아 타비니나, 세르게이 소콜로프 기자 모두 우크라이나계로 이들은 적극적으로 러시아 내에서 반러 행위를 지속하고 있다. 더불어 서구는 이와 같은 러시아 내 혼란을 부추기기 위해 노바야 가제타를 이용했고 무라토프에게 2021년 노벨 평화상을 수여했다. 

노벨 평화상이 서구의 주구들이 해당 국가의 분쟁을 이용하기 위해 수여하는 상으로 인식된 이후, 그 가치는 지속적으로 추락하고 있었다. 대표적인 것이 미하일 고르바초프의 1990년 수상과 드미트리 무라토프의 2021년 수상이 그것이다. 미하일 고르바초프는 이 냉전 종식의 공로를 인정받아 노벨 평화상을 수상받았지만 그는 그 결과로 조국인 러시아를 90년대 내내 조롱거리로 만들고 국가 경제를 피폐화 하는데 일조시켜 결국 모라토리움을 선언하게 만들었다. 러시아의 암흑기는 옐친의 무능도 있었지만 고르바초프의 무능도 함께 겹쳐 일어난 것이다. 그리고 평화상을 받은 고르바초프는 스스로가 서구의 주구가 되었음을 인정한 셈이다. 저신의 조국인 러시아를 침체기로 만들고 국가와 국민의 자존심에 생체기를 냈으며 러시아를 조롱거리로 만든 것에 대해 일말의 죄책감을 가지고 있다면 그 상을 받아서는 안 되는거였다. 

결국 고르바초프는 당당히 그 상을 받았다. 그와 같은 고르바초프가 냉전 종식의 세계사, 현대인류사적인 공이 있다 치더라도 무라토프가 평화상을 받은 것은 다분히 서방의 공작이나 다름없다. 그가 지구와 인류를 위해 뭘 했다고 노벨 평화상의 자격이 있는지 의문스럽다. 그가 지구와 인류, 세계사를 위해 무슨 공적을 남겼는가? 그러니 무라토프의 수상이 서방의 공작이라 의심 받는 이유인 것이다. lukybaby7@gmail.com
