고백 한 번 없이 우리는

끝났을까

어떻게 하면

한번도 사랑하지 않고

아직도 사랑하는가

고백할 수 있다면

옛 연못가에서

사랑이 뭐냐고 물으신다면? 답은 뻔하죠. 눈물의 씨앗이지요. 그만큼 이루어지지 않은 사랑이 더 애틋하기 마련입니다. 이 시도 그런 이야기를 담고 있네요. 구체적으로 어떤 사연인지 알 수 없지만 누구나 겪었을 일이지요. 뒤돌아보면 모든 것이 아름답지만 다시 돌아서면 현실이 눈을 크게 뜨고 노려보고 있네요.

후회 없는 삶이 어디 있을까요. 다시 기회가 주어진다면 좀 더 똑똑하게 처신할 텐데 하는 헛된 생각도 해 봅니다. 그래도 안타깝고 아쉬워 ‘한번만’, ‘한 번만’을 외칩니다. 띄어 쓰지 않은 ‘한번’은 ‘과거의 어느 때 놓친 기회’입니다. 앞으로 언젠가 맞이했으면 하는 때입니다. 띄어 쓴 ‘한 번’은 ‘두 번’은 아니어도 좋으니 다시 사랑하게 되길 바라는 비원(悲願)입니다.

고백하지 못한 사랑은 불행합니다. 고당(古塘), 즉 옛 연못가에서 다시 만나기만 한다면 반드시 후회를 남기지 않으리라 다짐해 보지만 어쩌면 시인은 똑 같은 상황이 되어도 사랑을 고백하지 못할지도 모릅니다. 왠지 차마 고백할 수 없었던 사정이 있지 않았을까요. 김수영은 시 「사랑」에서 ‘금이 간 너의 얼굴’에서 사랑을 배웠다고 고백합니다.

시인은 사랑하는 사람과 마주하였지만 아마 그 사람이 짊어진 삶의 불안을 보았을지도 모릅니다. 불안을 회피하려는 것이 아니라 사랑할 자리를 찾지 못했던 것은 아닐까요.
