On the 19th, the Blue House reaffirmed its existing position to the medical community, which is not participating in the ruling and opposition party consultative body, by saying, “It is realistically impossible to adjust the number of medical school students for the 2025 school year, when regular admissions are in progress.”
Jang Sang-yoon, the senior secretary for social affairs at the Blue House, stated the government’s position on the number of medical school students during a briefing at the Blue House in Yongsan that afternoon, and added, “The government also has a flexible position on the number of students after the 2026 school year,” and “If the medical community provides a reasonable plan with scientific evidence, we will discuss it with an open mind.”
He also said, “The medical community should not delay resolving the issue by attaching preconditions such as a change in the government’s attitude to the consultative body’s proposal,” and “It is our duty to the people to come to the table of dialogue and find a solution by putting our heads together.”
He also emphasized that “the government’s consistent position that the door to dialogue is open remains unchanged,” and that “patients are the people that doctors must protect.” He added, “I earnestly request that you once again come out to the table for dialogue and do not ignore the cries of patients, which are the reason doctors exist.”
