권현진 작가의 개인전(Visual Illusion)이 9월24일부터 10월26일까지, 서울시 종로구 자하문로 5길 18-4에 위치한 표 갤러리 2-3층에서 열린다.
그리는 것에서 시작하여 디지털 미디어의 상이한 표현방법과 콘셉트에도 불구하고 권현진의 작업은 일상적 회화에 일류전의 세계를 큐브의 세계로 새롭게 환기 시켜준다.
오랫동안 자신의 존재에 깊은 관심을 가지며 사유해온 작가는 많은 예술가나 철학자들이 스스로 묻고 답하듯이 그림을 통해 자신의 존재와 의미를 찾으려 했다.
무엇보다 작가는 그리는 것에 대해 특별한 기법과 형식을 취하고 있는데 모든 이미지를 사실적으로 묘사하기보다는 그릴 대상을 개념적으로 이해한 후, 화면 위에 무한대의 형상으로 펼쳐낸다.
작품들은 얼핏 보면 한없이 부드럽게 펼쳐진 바닷가의 모래언덕 풍경 같은, 조용히 흐르는 듯한 이미지, 혹은 신비스런 문양들이 자연스럽고 점층적으로 조립된 풍경으로 콜라쥬화 되어 있다.
작가는 “색이 생각을 변화시키고, 행동을 바꾸고, 반응을 일으키고, 의사소통에 있어 강력한 역할을 한다”고 말한다. 실제 그의 작품에는 우리가 떠올릴 수 있는 구체적인 메시지나 암시가 없다. 아울러 연상되는 어떤 것도 없지만 그는 이 불확실한 것들을 통해 본질을 표출하고 싶어 하는 강한 열망을 지니고 있다.
그래서 그의 진정한 자화상은 자연스럽게 쌓인 바닷가의 물과 만나 헤어지는 모래풍경 속에 모습을 위장한 채 숨어있다. ‘Visual Poetry’에서 일류 전에 이르는 시적 이미지를 가진 추상풍경의 회화는 침잠되고 평온하다.
그것은 마치 거대한 클래식처럼 장중하며 동시에 리듬감 있는 발라드풍처럼 섬세하고 시적이며 달콤하다. 물론 그의 작품에 음악적 리듬은 음악에 생명을 불어넣는 요소보다 흐름에 장단을 맞춰주는 절제된 감성과 단아한 질서의 교향곡에 더 가깝다.
그는 자연과 예술은 물론 인간이 갖는 리듬에 여전히 예민하다. 선과 색의 조화에서 생동감 넘치는 리듬, 자연스럽지만 우연적 효과가 지배적으로 보이는 것들도 사실은 그 이미지가 하늘에서 내려다 본 듯한 경치로 보여 지기 때문이다.
일관되게 그는 회화주의자들이 보여주는 붓끝의 기교가 아닌 가슴에서 배어나는 내면의 울림으로 추상풍경의 이미지가 완성된다.
캔버스 천위에 추상적 에스키스를 투사해 그리기 시작해 생생한 색상으로 이뤄진 권현진의 이미지 제작과 형상은 그 독창적 언어로 새로운 시각적 경험을 만들어낸다.
이런 과정에서 형성된 그 이미지들을 그는 ‘Visual Poetry(비주얼 포에트리)’ 시리즈라고 명명했다. 추상회화 속에서 내면의 다양한 기억과 감성 또는 체험, 삶의 파편들이 은밀한 관계를 이루면서 화폭에 형성된 풍경으로 구현됐다.
특히 이번 개인전의 작업에서 권현진 작가는 다양한 색채의 배열과 움직임을 통해 꿈꾸는 듯한 환상적인 느낌과 시적 환상을 불러일으키는 작품들을 충실하게 드러내고 있다.
특히 고채도의 색상과 물감의 가변적 성질이 주는 표면 효과는 추상적 이미지를 극대화하는 시각적 경험을 구축하면서 비주얼 포에트리에서 진화된 비쥬얼 일류전의 큐브 시리즈를 혁신적으로 보여준다.
권현진의 작품이 단순히 시각적 무의식과 시각적 감각을 넘어서서, 공감각적인 이미지를 창출하면서 감상자들에게 회화가 갖는 그 이상의 감정과 상상을 충실하게 경험케 해준다.
작가는 최근 뉴욕에 볼타 아트쇼에 개인전으로 참석 큰 주목을 받았다.
권현진(b.1980)은 이화여자대학교 서양학과를 졸업하고 뉴욕 Pratt Institute에서 페인팅 석사를 취득 후, 연세대학교에서 미디어아트 석사 과정을 마친 뒤 홍익대학교 미술학 박사를 취득했다. 유중아트센터, 가일미술관, 쉐마 미술관, 헝가리 Mako Education Centre 등 미술관에서 개인전을 하였고 서울 인터콘티넨탈호텔, 호림아트센터, 유중아트센터, 예술의 전당, 동대문디자인플라자, 홍콩 홍콩컨벤션센터, 도쿄 마이니치 옥션 하우스, 싱가폴 Marina Bay Sands Expo&Convention Centre, 중국 안휘성 허빼이 미술관, 뉴욕 덤보아트쇼 등 국내외 다수의 단체전에도 그의 작품을 선보였다.
또한 넷플릭스 드라마 《더글로리》에서 극중 이사라 작품, 롯데백화점본점 영플라자 미디어파사드, 롯데 월드타워몰 롯데시네마 월드타워관의 웰컴파사드, 국민은행을지로 본사 로비 영상 등 다양한 프로젝트에 참여했다. 주요 소장처는 루이비통재단, 국립현대미술관, 홍콩 한국대사관, 국민은행 을지로본사, 서울대학병원, 한국경제신문사, 세아특수강, 삼미건설 등이 있다.

The artist, who has long been deeply interested in and contemplated his own existence, tried to find his own existence and meaning through paintings, as many artists and philosophers ask and answer questions of themselves.
More than anything, the artist adopts a special technique and form for drawing. Rather than realistically depicting all images, he conceptually understands the subject of the drawing and then unfolds it into an infinite shape on the screen. At first glance, the works are collaged into landscapes that seem to flow quietly, like endlessly unfolding sand dunes on a beach, or landscapes in which mysterious patterns are naturally and gradually assembled.

Kwon Hyun-jin (b. 1980) graduated from the Department of Western Studies at Ewha Womans University, received a master's degree in painting from Pratt Institute in New York, completed a master's course in media art at Yonsei University, and received a doctorate in fine arts from Hongik University.
