내가 중국의 형이상학 혹은 우주론을 보면서 가장 동의하기 힘든 부분이 있다. 동중서의 '찬인감응설', 이른바 하늘과 인간이 서로 연결되어 있고, 영향을 주고 받는다는 이론이다. 이 이론은 자연재해의 책임을 군주에게 물으려는 의도가 강하다. 여름날 가뭄으로 백성들이 고생을 할 때 군주가 자신의 부덕에 책임을 느끼고 기우제를 지내는 것이 그렇다. 사실 이런 기우제를 지내면 비가 오기는 온다. 비가 올 때까지 지내니까 비가 오는게 당연하지 않은가?
이 천인감응에 기초해서 동아시아의 우주론은 무극인 태극에서 음양오행의 운동을 거쳐 인간의 성정까지 하나로 연결되어 있다. 때문에 동아시아의 형이상학은 천인감응을 부정하면 성립하기가 힘들 정도이다. 하지만 이러한 이론은 현대 과학의 세례를 받은 자들에게는 더 이상 설득력이 없다. 그럼에도 불구하고 내가 유일하게, 아니 기꺼이 기쁜 마음으로 받아들이는 경우가 딱 하나 있다. 백제의 오랜 가요 <정읍사>를 읽을 때이다. 이 가요에는 휘엉청 밝은 달을 바라보면서 갖는 한 여인의 절절한 마음이 그대로 투영되고, 또 그 밝은 달이 인간의 마음들을 그대로 엮어주고 있다. 이런 뛰어난 시가를 백제인들이 지었다. 먼저 다시 읽어보자!

달하 노피곰 도다샤
달님이시여, 높이높이 돋으시어
어긔야 머리곰 비취오시라
멀리멀리 비춰 주소서.

이 시를 읽으면서 가슴에 무언가 떨림이 오지 않는가? 언덕 위에 올라가서 밝게 비치는 달을 향해 기원하는 여인네의 간절한 목소리가 들리지 않는가? 온 몸으로 저미어 오는 달빛은 신명을 다해 기원하는 여인에 대한 응답이 아닌가? 사람의 목소리와 자연의 빛깔이 하나가 되는 느낌이 들지 않는가?
여인의 남편은 이 마을 저 마을 장터를 찾아 물건을 파는 행상이다. 그의 발길은 잠시도 쉬지 않고 걷고 있다. 그런 남편을 생각하면 집안에 편히 앉아 있을 수가 없는 여인이다. 아, 나의 님은 지금쯤 어디로 향하고 있을까? 요즘 처럼 교통이나 통신이 발달하지 않은 그 옛날에는 집문을 나서는 순간 거의 소식이 두절되는 경우가 다반사다. 아주 급한 소식이 있을 때나 사람을 시켜 전하는 경우가 있을 뿐이다. 그러니 집에 앉아 있는 아낙의 마음은 온통 님의 알 수 없는 행보에만 쏠린다. 그런데 오늘은 보름 달이 훤하게 떠올라 있다. 달도 이 여인의 마음을 알아서인가? 이 여인의 간절한 마음을 먼길을 가고 있는 님에게 전달해주기 위해 훤하게 비추고 있는 것인가? "전혀 그렇지 않아. 당신, 지금 무슨 황당한 소리를 하고 있나?" 그렇지만 여인의 마음과 달빛 그리고 행상인 남편의 발걸음은 하나로 연결되어 있다.

지금도 그렇지만 보따리 행상의 삶은 참으로 고단하다. 무거운 짐을 지고 이 마을 저 고을의 장터를 찾는 힘이 들지만, 집에서 자기를 기다리고 있는 아내를 생각하면 이런 고생은 아무 것도 아니다. 빨리 이 물건들을 팔고 집으로 달려가고 싶을 것이다. 손에 돈푼이라도 생기면 주막 집에 들러 국밥이라도 한 그릇 시켜 놓고 막걸리라도 한 잔 걸치고 싶기도 할 것이다. 하지만 그는 그리 하지 않으리라. 오늘은 훤한 달빛이 빨리 집으로 오라는 아내의 목소리 같다. 때문에 주막을 들를 돈으로 아내가 갖고 싶어하는 옥비녀를 살까 아니면 이쁜 신을 살까만 궁리를 한다.
동산의 훤한 달을 보고 있는 아내에게는 오히려 힘들게 짐을 지고 가는 남편이 안쓰러워 보인다. 너무 발걸음을 재촉하지 말고 쉬엄 쉬엄 다녔으면 한다. "어느 곳에나 놓으십시오." 너무 서둘지 말라는 바램이다. 하지만 님을 향한 걱정은 시도 때도 없이 이어진다. 그러다가 날이 저물면 어떡할까? 어두운 밤길을 어떻게 갈까? 그런데 오늘은 훤한 달이 높이 떠 있다. 하늘 높이 떠 있는 달은 남편을 걱정하는 여인의 간절한 마음을 다 알고나 있다고 하듯 훤히 비추고 있다.
"달하 노피곰 도다샤, 어긔야 머리곰 비취오시라."
장터에서 물건을 다 판 남편도 저 달을 보면서 '얼렁 집에 오시라"는 아내의 목소리로 듣는다. 그야말로 달빛을 매개로 아내와 남편의 마음이 하나로 엮여 있는 것 같다. 천인 감응이 따로 없다. 이러니 내가 동중서의 '천인감응설'을 머리로는 부정하면서도 가슴으로는 뜨겁게 믿는 것이 아닐까? 이 아름다운 가요를 백제인들이 지었다. 지금 다시 읽어도 감동적이다. 노래를 부르는 백제의 저 아낙과 나 사이에 무수한 시공간의 차이가 전혀 느껴지지 않는다. jogel4u@outlook.com
