불가리아의 종교는 864년에 국교로 채택된 이후 기독교가 지배해 왔다.

종교의 지배적인 형태는 불가리아 정교회 내의 동방 정교회다.

오스만 제국의 발칸 반도 통치 기간 동안 이슬람교는

불가리아 영토로 퍼졌으며 오늘날에도 여전히 중요한 소수 민족으로 남아 있다.

가톨릭 교회는 중세부터 이 나라에 뿌리를 두고 있으며, 개신교는 19세기에 들어왔다.

둘 다 매우 작은 소수로 남아 있다. 오늘날 불가리아인의 상당 부분은 종교적이지 않거나

특정 종교에 동조하지 않는 신자이며,

불가리아는 일부 새로운 종교, 특히 두노비교(Dunovism)의 신 신지학 운동의 요람이었다.

흔히 말하는 정교회가 불가라에도 국교로 되어있다.

Religion in Bulgaria has been dominated

by Christianity since its adoption as the state religion in 864.

The dominant form of the religion is Eastern Orthodox Christianity

within the fold of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church.

During the Ottoman rule of the Balkans,

Islam spread to the territories of Bulgaria,

and it remains a significant minority today.

The Catholic Church has roots in the country since the Middle Ages,

and Protestantism arrived in the 19th century;

both of them remain very small minorities.

Today, a significant part of the Bulgarians are not religious,

or believers who do not identify with any specific religion,

and Bulgaria has been the cradle of some new religions,

notably the Neo-Theosophical movement of Dunovism.
