불가리아 수도 소피아
해안이나 스키 리조트로 향하는
방문객들은 불가리아의 여유로운 수도를 종종 간과하지만
그들은 뭔가 특별한 것을 놓치고 있다.
소피아는 대도시는 아니지만 양파 모양의 돔형 교회, 오스만 모스크,
완고한 붉은 군대 기념물이 흩어져 있어 절충적이고
이국적인 느낌을 주는 현대적이고 젊은 도시다.
지하철 건설 중 발굴 작업을 통해 이 도시가 '세르디카'로 불렸던
거의 2000년 전 로마 유적의 보물창고가 드러났다.
건물과 대로에서 멀리 떨어진 광대한 공원과 잘 손질된 정원은 환영받는
휴식처를 제공하며, 거대한 비토샤산(Mt Vitosha)의 스키 슬로프와 하이킹 코스는 중심부에서 버스로 짧은 거리에 있다.
불가리아 최고의 박물관, 미술관, 레스토랑, 클럽이 많이 있는
소피아는 여러분이 계속 머물며 더 많은 곳을 탐험하도록 설득할 수 있다.
Bulgaria's pleasingly laid-back capital is often overlooked
by visitors heading to the coast or the ski resorts,
but they're missing something special. Sofia is no grand metropolis,
but it's a modern, youthful city, with a scattering of onion-domed churches, Ottoman mosques and stubborn Red Army monuments
that lend an eclectic, exotic feel. Excavation work carried out
during construction of the metro unveiled a treasure trove of Roman ruins
from nearly 2000 years ago, when the city was called 'Serdica'.
Away from the buildings and boulevards, vast parks
and manicured gardens offer a welcome respite, and the ski slopes
and hiking trails of mighty Mt Vitosha are just a short bus ride
from the centre. Home to many of Bulgaria's finest museums, galleries,
restaurants and clubs, Sofia may persuade you to stick around and explore further.
