[인터뷰] 유재희 작가의 독특한 시선..일상의 창 밖 풍경, 작품이 되다

브레이크뉴스 노보림 기자= 작품은 작가를 닮는다는 말이 있다. 어찌보면 창작자의 생각이나 작업 환경은 그대로 작품에 투영될 수 밖에 없다. 때문에 작품을 들여다 보기 이전에, 작가를 먼저 들여다 보면 그 작품을 보다 잘 이해할 수 있다. 이에 브레이크뉴스는 국내 작가들과의 릴레이 인터뷰를 통해 작가의 작품은 물론, 삶의 이야기를 들어보는 시간을 가지려고 한다. <편집자 주>

-작품을 그릴 때 주로 어디에서 영감을 받나.

내 작품은 일상적인 삶을 모티브로 한다. 비가 내린 후 안개 낀 빌딩 숲, 거리, 도시 사람들, 빗방울이 떨어지는 유리창, 소나기가 퍼붓는 하늘, 바람에 흔들리는 나무, 우리 집 정원 대나무의 신선한 그린 컬러 등 풍경과 도시인들의 이야기가 주제이다. 작품이 창조되는 과정은 매우 단순하고, 즉흥적이고, 추상적이다. 작업실 창밖으로 보이는 거리풍경, 마주 보이는 건물 창 안의 사람들이 내 그림의 주인공이 된다. 보통 작업을 시작하기 전 명상을 한다. 명상은 내 작업 과정의 일부분이다. 조용히 빈 화면을 응시하고 있는 그대로 보는 것이다. 비단에서 풀린 실 한 가닥, 튀는 잉크 한 방울, 이런 사소한 것들이 작업의 원천이 된다. 또한 개인적인 추억이 담긴 장소나 음악도 내게 영감을 준다. 나는 나만의 독특한 시선에서 세상을 바라보고 관람자에게 새로운 관점을 제시하는 것을 좋아한다. 주로 선에서도 영감을 받는데, 대나무 펜, 먹, 비단은 내가 가장 좋아하는 예술 제작 도구이다. 섬세한 선은 나 자신을 상징하는 은유적 이미지를 만든다. 내 작업은 나 자신의 솔직한 이야기이고, 고백이다. 이번 개인전 제목은 ‘My Secret Diary (나의 비밀일기)’ 이다. 비밀일기 연작은 연인을 테마로 그들의 스토리를 담고 있다. 만나고, 헤어지고, 다시 재회하는 연인의 이야기는 나의 이야기이면서 동시에 관람자들의 이야기가 될 수도 있다.

-왜 작가의 길을 선택했나.

나는 어릴 적부터 그림일기를 좋아했다. 그리는 것을 좋아했고, 색깔에 민감했다. 말 없고 혼자 있기를 좋아하는 내게 그림은 좋은 취미이자 친구이기도 했다. 고등학교 미술 선생님의 추천으로 미대에 진학했고, 동양화를 계속하고 싶어서 작가의 길을 선택 했다. 그림은 나만의 것이고, 가장 나를 자유롭게 만들어 준다. 그림을 그리다 보니 관람자에게 치유나 힐링을 주는 것보다 내가 더 큰 위안을 받는다는 것을 깨닫는다. 그림은 나를 살게 하고, 숨 쉬게 하고, 위로를 준다. 그래서 나는 작가의 길을 계속 가고 있다.

-작가로 활동하며 가장 힘들었던 순간이 있다면 언제였나.

무엇보다 불투명하고 경제적으로 불안한 미래일 것이다. 좋은 작품을 하고 작가로서 성공한다는 것은 정말 어려운 일이다. 힘든 순간을 극복하고 작품 활동을 지속하기 위해서는 강한 정신력과 작품의 진정성, 그리고 초연함을 가져야 한다. 나의 작품은 내 안의 내면 깊숙한 곳에서 나온다. 나는 예술가는 여행자나 수행자와 같다고 생각한다.

-반대로 가장 행복했던 순간은?

나의 개인적인 감정이나 추억을 담은 지극히 사적인 작업들이 대중의 공감을 얻는 순간이다. 최근 몇 년 동안 작업실에 잠들어 있던 작품들이 해외 콜렉터들에게 판매되었다. 미국의 아트매거진에 내 작품에 관한 기사가 발간되기도 했다. 큰 성공이 아니더라도 누군가 나의 작품을 공감해주고 소장하고 싶어 한다는 것은 작가에게 큰 힘이 된다. 내 그림이 세상과 소통하고 빛나고 살아있다는 느낌을 받는 순간이 가장 행복하다.

-앞으로의 전시 계획은.

나의 궁극적인 목표는 대중과 소통할 수 있고, 위안과 기쁨을 줄 수 있는 좋은 작품을 하는 것이다. 예술 작품은 그런 힘을 가지고 있다고 믿는다. 나에게 그림은 나 자신을 찾아가는 여정이다. 그 과정에서 스스로 치유하고 자유로워지게 될 것이다.

올해의 전시 계획은 서울에서 개인전과 12월엔 미국 마이애미에서 Miami Red Dot 아트페어에 참가하는 것이다. 앞으로의 전시 계획은 한국, 미국, 유럽의 아트페어에 참가해서 작품을 많이 알리는 것이다. 이번 개인전이 내게 발돋움의 계기가 되어주길 바란다.

- Where do you mainly get inspiration when drawing your works?

My works are motivated by everyday life. The subjects of my works are landscapes and stories of city people, such as a forest of foggy buildings after rain, streets, city people, windows with raindrops falling, a sky pouring down rain, trees swaying in the wind, and the fresh green color of the bamboo in my garden. The process of creating my works is very simple, improvisational, and abstract. The streetscape seen outside my studio window and the people in the windows of the building opposite me become the main characters of my paintings. I usually meditate before I start working. Meditation is a part of my work process. I just stare at the blank screen and see it as it is. A single thread unraveled from silk, a drop of ink splashed, these little things become the source of my work. Also, places and music that contain personal memories inspire me. I like to look at the world from my own unique perspective and present new perspectives to the viewer. I am mostly inspired by lines, and bamboo pens, ink, and silk are my favorite tools for making art. The delicate lines create metaphorical images that symbolize myself. My work is my honest story and confession. The title of this solo exhibition is ‘My Secret Diary.’ The Secret Diary series contains the stories of lovers with the theme of lovers. The stories of lovers meeting, breaking up, and reuniting can be my story, but they can also be the stories of the viewers.

-Why did you choose to become an artist?

I liked drawing diaries since I was young. I liked drawing and was sensitive to colors. For me, who is quiet and likes to be alone, drawing was a good hobby and friend. I went to art school on the recommendation of my high school art teacher, and I chose to become an artist because I wanted to continue oriental painting. Painting is my own and it makes me free the most. As I draw, I realize that I receive greater comfort than healing or healing to the viewer. Painting makes me live, breathe, and comfort me. That is why I continue to follow the path of an artist.

-When was the most difficult moment while working as an artist?

Above all, it will be an uncertain and economically unstable future. It is really difficult to create good works and succeed as an artist. In order to overcome difficult times and continue to work on your art, you need to have a strong spirit, authenticity of your work, and a sense of detachment. My works come from deep within me. I think artists are like travelers or practitioners.

- On the other hand, what was your happiest moment?

It is the moment when my extremely personal works containing my personal feelings or memories gain sympathy from the public. In recent years, works that had been sleeping in my studio were sold to overseas collectors. An article about my work was even published in an American art magazine. Even if it is not a great success, it is a great strength for an artist that someone sympathizes with my work and wants to own it. The moment when I feel that my paintings communicate with the world, shine, and are alive is the happiest moment.

- Future exhibition plans

My ultimate goal is to create good works that can communicate with the public and provide comfort and joy. I believe that works of art have that kind of power. To me, paintings are a journey to find myself. In the process, you will heal yourself and become free.

This year's exhibition plan is to have a solo exhibition in Seoul and participate in the Miami Red Dot Art Fair in Miami, USA in December. Future exhibition plans are to participate in art fairs in Korea, the US, and Europe to make my work more widely known. I hope this solo exhibition will be a stepping stone for me.
