팔레스타인 지방, 지금의 이스라엘 지역은 과거와, 현재, 미래에 있어서도 매우 중요한 요충지다. 고대로부터 팔레스타인 땅을 지배하는 자들은 동방과의 가장 중요한 무역, 군사적 거점인 시리아 지역과 최대 곡창 지대인 이집트 나일 지역을 육로로 연결하는 가장 중요한 길목이 팔레스타인 지방이라고 보았다.
이는 현대에도 마찬가지다. 소아시아 지역에서 카프카스를 지나 러시아로 들어가는 길목 또한 팔레스타인 지방이며 육로로 이집트를 통해 아시아의 물류가 아프리카로 들어가는 길목 또한 팔레스타인이다. 그리고 지중해 지역을 중심으로 하는 해상 무역의 거점 중 하나가 팔레스타인이라 볼 수 있겠다. 이 땅은 고대 시대부터 현재에 이르기까지 절대불변의 교통, 경제, 산업, 지정학적인 요충지로 나타난다. 게다가 아랍과 유럽이 문화적으로 교류했던 회랑도 팔레스타인 땅이라 볼 수 있겠다.
그러나 해당 영토가 유태인들이 애초부터 기원한 땅도 아니다. 성경에서는 이집트의 노예로 있다가 이스라엘로 들어와 정착했다하며 이미 그 땅은 가나안계의 땅이다. 이스라엘은 이집트를 떠나 가나안을 정복하면서 가나안계 사람들을 씨도 남기지 않고 하늘에 계시는 그분의 명을 받아 닥치는데로 살육했다.
원주민들의 살육을 끝낸 유태인들은 그 땅에 자리 잡아 왕국 시대를 거쳤고 아시리아-신바빌로니아-아케메네스 페르시아-헬레니즘 제국의 지배 시기를 거쳐 로마 제국의 지배를 받았다. 그러니까 자주 민족으로써 왕국을 건설해 그 땅에 자주권을 행사할 때보다 오히려 남의 지배를 받았던 시기가 더 길었던 것이다. 로마는 5현제 중의 하나인 하드리아누스가 유태인의 디아스포라를 명하게 된다. 이는 유태인들의 연이은 반란으로 인해 그들의 와해시키기 위한 일종의 전략이었다.
서기 132년부터 135년까지 유태인의 수장인 바르 코크바 반란이 실패한 후, 모든 유태인들은 로마 제국에 의해 예루살렘에서 추방되었고, 일부는 유태의 영토 밖으로 추방되기도 했다. 로마 제국은 고대 역사 속에서 이스라엘을 가장 많이 적대하고 괴롭혔던 필리스티아(Philistia)라는 이름을 따서 이 지역의 이름을 시리아 팔레스티나로 바꾸었다. 필리스티아(Philistia)는 성경에서 "블레셋"이라는 이름으로 나온다.

지금 하마스-이스라엘 전쟁과 같은 문제에 대해 이미 집단 서방이 이스라엘이라는 국가를 만들어 놓음으로써 생성된 문제이니 집단 서방이 이 전쟁에 대해 책임 지는 자세가 필요하다. 물론 벤 구리온 같은 좌파 유태계 정치인을 이용해 뭔가 해볼려는 러시아의 전신 소련도 여기에 동참했었기에 현 러시아도 이 책임에서 자유로울 수 없다.
