한국인 소설가 한강의 노벨문학상 수상 유감(有感)

한국인 소설가 한강의 노벨상 수상을 진심으로 축하한다. 작가적 성취를 높이 평가하고 경의를 표한다.

이제 노벨상에 대한 콤플렉스를 털어버렸다.

세계문학과 어깨를 나란히 하고 한국문학의 본때를 보여주게 되었다. 동양에선 중국과 일본이 두 사람씩 상을 받았지만 한국은 번번이 밀려났다가 이제야 한을 풀게 되었다. ‘국격을 높였다’ ‘새 역사를 썼다’ 이딴 말을 하지 말자. 있는 그대로를 인정받았을 뿐이다.

처음으로 수상작품을 우리글로 읽을 수 있게 된 것이 기뻤다.

그동안 영어권 불어권 작품을 주로 읽었고 그 밖의 번역된 작품은 읽기를 끔찍이도 싫어했다. 그만큼 번역이 어렵고 완벽할 수 없다는 것을 알고 있었기 때문이다.

해묵은 근본적인 문제가 다시 고개를 들었다.

문학에서 전 세계의 독자들이 공감할 수 있는 주제의 보편화가 가능할까. 전통적인 민족의 고유정서를 뛰어넘어서 세계적인 정신을 공유할 수 있을까. 번역을 통해 과연 언어의 장벽을 완전히 극복할 수 있을까. 나의 결론은 늘 고개를 갸우뚱하는 것이었다.

번역이 가장 중요한 역할을 했다.

이번 수상은 바로 번역문학의 승리였다. 한마디로 독자의 ‘모국어로의 순화’(domestication)가 어김없이 ‘외국어 현지화’에 성공을 거둔 것이다. 주제의 보편화와 정서의 공유를 획득한 것이다.

우리글로 원작을 읽기 때문에 실망하는 사람들이 생길 수도 있다.

이럴 경우 노벨상의 권위와 명성에 금이 갈까봐 걱정된다. 근자에 노벨상이 비틀거리고 있는 것도 사실이다. 한림원이 발표해놓고 켕겼든지 “호메로스와 사포도 공연을 위한 시를 썼다”면서 딜런의 노랫말을 ‘귀를 위한 시’라고 치켜세웠다. “미국 가요의 전통 속에 새로운 시적 표현들을 창조했다”고 선정 이유를 밝혔다. 어떻게 플라톤이 ‘10번째 뮤즈’라고 극찬한 사포를 그와 비견할 수가 있단 말인가.

노벨문학상이 엄숙주의를 버리고 문학의 경계를 넓히는 변화의 신호탄을 쏘아 올렸다.

이 땅엔 눈부신 문학적 성공을 거두고 엄청난 내공을 쌓은, 기라성 같은 작가들이 즐비한데, 세대를 훌쩍 넘어 수상한 것이 어쩐지 좀 아쉽다. 원로들이나 이승을 떠난 작고문인들이 이 상을 받을 수 있으면 얼마나 좋으랴.

대한민국 한국문학이 세계의 정상에 우뚝 섰다. 기쁜 날이다.

다시 한 번 한강의 노벨상 수상을 축하한다.

Regretful that Korean novelist Han Kang won the Nobel Prize in Literature

I sincerely congratulate Korean novelist Han Kang on winning the Nobel Prize. I highly value and pay tribute to her achievements as a writer.

I have now shaken off my complex about the Nobel Prize.

We have come to stand shoulder to shoulder with world literature and show the example of Korean literature. In the East, China and Japan have each won two awards, but Korea has been pushed back time and again, and now we can finally let go of our regrets. Let’s not say things like “We raised our national prestige” or “We wrote a new history.” We have simply been recognized for who we are.

I was glad that I could read the award-winning work in Korean for the first time.

I had mainly read works from English and French languages ​​up until then, and I absolutely hated reading translated works from other languages. That’s because I knew that translation is difficult and cannot be perfect.

An old, fundamental problem has raised its head again.

Is it possible to universalize a theme in literature that readers from all over the world can relate to? Can we share a global spirit by overcoming the traditional national sentiments? Can we completely overcome the language barrier through translation? My conclusion was always to tilt my head.

Translation played the most important role.

This award was the triumph of translated literature. In a word, the reader’s ‘domestication’ to the native language has successfully achieved ‘localization of a foreign language’. It has achieved universalization of the subject matter and sharing of emotions.

Some people may be disappointed because they read the original in Korean.

I am worried that the authority and reputation of the Nobel Prize will be damaged in this case. It is also true that the Nobel Prize has been faltering recently. The Academy announced the award and then criticized it, saying, “Homer and Sappho also wrote poems for the performance,” and praised Dylan’s lyrics as ‘poems for the ears.’ The reason for the selection was that “he created new poetic expressions within the tradition of American pop music.” How can Sappho, whom Plato praised as the “10th Muse,” be compared to him?

The Nobel Prize in Literature has sent a signal of change, abandoning solemnity and expanding the boundaries of literature.

In this country, there are many brilliant writers who have achieved dazzling literary success and built up tremendous inner strength, but it is a bit disappointing that the award was given to someone who was older than his generation. How great it would be if the award could be given to elders or deceased writers who have passed away.

Korean literature in the Republic of Korea has risen to the top of the world. It is a happy day.

Once again, congratulations to Han Kang on winning the Nobel Prize.
