한반도 남북한이 통일되면? 누가 초대 통일 최고 정치지도자가 될까?

필자는 사무실 출입문에 오래된, 종이 색이 누렇게 변한, 신문지 한 페이지를 붙여 놨다. 조선일보 2018년 4월26일자 A24면이다. 사무실을 출입하면서, 늘상 이 신문지면을 바라다 본다. 제목은 “거인이 잠든 시골 교회, 이정표도 없었다”이다.

두 번에 걸쳐 영국의 총리(제61대 총리=1940년 5월 10일~1945년 7월 26일. 제63대 총리=1951년 10월 26일~1955년 4월 7일)를 지낸, 윈스턴 처칠(Winston Churchill· 1874~1965)의 무덤을 취재하면서, 처칠의 정치적인 업적을 환기시킨 글이다.

이 글은 송동훈 문명탐험가가 썼다. 그는 이 글에서 “소련과 비밀리에 불가침조약을 맺은 히틀러는 1939년 9월 1일, 폴란드를 침공하며 유럽에 대한 야욕을 드러냈다. 2차 세계대전의 서막이었다. 1940년 5월 10일 밤 영국 총리로 최전선에 선 처칠은 비장하게 외쳤다. 이어 “처칠이 없었다면 2차 세계대전의 진행과 결말은 달랐을 것이다. 오늘날의 세상도 지금 같지 않을 게 분명하다. 한 사람의 힘으로 처칠은 세상을 바꿨다.”면서 “처칠의 영국은 1년 넘게 히틀러와 홀로 싸웠다. 1941년 12월 7일 일본이 진주만을 폭격하면서 미국이 참전했다. 처칠의 예상대로 미국의 도움으로 연합군은 승리했다. 종전 후 처칠은 한 차례 더 총리(1951~1955년)를 지냈고 1965년 역사의 무대에서 퇴장했다.”고 썼다.

처칠은 6년(1939년-1945년)에 걸친 2차 세계대전을, 미국이 가세하게 되어, 연합국의 승리로 이끌었다. 처칠이 히틀러를 퇴패시켰다.

필자는 처칠을 존경한다. 그의 나이 고령인 66세부터 71세 때까지, 영국의 총리(2차총리를 마칠 때의 나이는 81세)를 지냈다. 이 기간은 제2차 세계대전 기간이었다. 이 전쟁을 승리로 이끈 승리자였다.

정치인 처칠의 일생을 뜯어보면서, 한반도 남북한이 통일되면 초대 통일 최고정치지도자로, 누가 될 것인가를 묵상해본 적이 있다. 남북한의 인구-재산 규모 면에서 남한이 우월하니, 남한 출신이 초대 통일 최고 정치지도자가 되리라 예상한다. 동서독 통일과정에서도, 국력규모가 우월한 서독출신이 통일독일의 초대 지도자가 됐었다.

남한의 정치권이 해야 할 일이 하나 있다. 분단이 극복된 이후, 통일된 한민족 시대를 이끌, 뛰어난 정치인을 양성하는 일이다. 그에게 민주주의가 완성된 시대에 한반도의 웅혼(雄渾)을 펼칠 기개를 심어주어야 한다.

한반도에 이런 시기가 오면, 처칠 같은 뛰어난 민족 지도자가 탄생, 한민족의 웅비시대를 열어갔으면 한다. 비노니, 비노니...moonilsuk@naver.com
